ASUS lets loose terabyte-packin’ M70 laptop

April 11th, 2008 accolades Posted in Laptops | No Comments » 382 views

We got our hands on ASUS’s beefy M70 laptop way back at CES earlier this year, but it looks like the company has just now gotten around to letting the monster loose on the general populace. In case you missed it, this one packs up to one terabyte of storage (in the form of two 500GB drives), along with a 17-inch WUXGA display, your choice of Core 2 Duo processors up to a T9300, ATI Mobile Radeon HD3650 or HD3470 graphics, and an optional Blu-ray drive, among other expectedly top-end features. To make sure no one else but you gets to toy around with all that, ASUS has also seen fit to include not one but two security measures, including the usual fingerprint scanner and ASUS’s trademark SmartLogon face-scanning technology. No word on a price, but we’re guessing that’s a detail best kept on a need to know basis.

NVIDIA continues to hate on Intel, promises sub-$45 integrated chipset

April 11th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 508 views

Following up yesterday’s trash talk with a little action, NVIDIA has disclosed plans to create a sub-$45 processing platform which the GPU-maker is calling, “The World’s Most Affordable Vista Premium PC.” The architecture will combine VIA’s Isaiah processor with an integrated NVIDIA graphics chipset, which the company claims outperforms Intel’s Celeron-based, 945 IGP/ICH4 setup handily. Apparently, the combo is capable of 36 GFLOPS versus Intel’s 6.4GFLOPS — which we shouldn’t have to tell you is a ton of GFLOPS. We’re excited about the prospect of better performance in an integrated chipset (we’ve all suffered at the hands of the GMA950), but we don’t want to see this end in a back-alley knife fight. Keep your cool, guys.

April 11th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 360 views

Whether you call it the HDR-TG3E (as it’s known in Europe) or the HDR-TG1 (as it’s been dubbed everywhere else), it’s still the world’s smallest 1080i camcorder. Tracy and Matt got their hands on an early unit for all your unboxing and first-impression pleasures. They’re already “very impressed” with the “fabulous” image quality when viewed on their 50-inch plasma. Don’t let the Queen’s English and SCART adapter fool you, this is pretty much exactly what you can expect to land Stateside next month. Click through for the moving pictures then hit up that read link for a more detailed analysis — looks like Sony’s got themselves a winner.

AgfaPhoto’s DV-5000Z SDHC camcorder shoots 720p

April 11th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 372 views

Though not nearly as sexy (or well-spec’d, for that matter) as Sony’s recently-unveiled HDR-TG1, AgfaPhoto’s DV-5000Z still manages to hold its own on paper. Measuring in at 4.7- x 2.75-inches (12- x 7-centimeters) and weighing just over 7-ounces (200-grams), this HD camcorder features a 5-megapixel Micron CMOS sensor, 2.5-inch flip-out LCD, 3x optical zoom and an SD / SDHC slot to store everything on. As for shooting capabilities, it’ll capture clips at 1,280 x 720 (using H.264 compression) and snag 16-bit stereo sound all the while. You’ll also find USB connectivity, a rechargeable Li-ion and video out, natch. Unfortunately, there’s no mention of this €249 ($393) device ever coming Stateside, but it’ll be ready to roll in Russia later this month.

Siemens Demonstrate the Gigaset SE68 WiMAX Express Card

Siemens is busy preparing the impending WiMAX onslaught and it has demonstrated its Gigaset SE68 WiMAX Express Card. In theory it could download as fast as 20Mbps via a USB connection.

Now all we need is… WiMAX deployment. Normally, it should happen this year, and Sprint is betting big on it, with the support of Asus and Intel who have both promised to provide “affordable” WiMAX hardware.

HTC Post Comfortable Earnings – Good Design

HTC Post Comfortable Earnings – Good Design Sells

While Motorola and Palm have been taking a beating in their recent earnings, HTC does much better – at least in terms of profitability. Their earnings increased 38.6% compared to last year to top $1.08B.

HTC does not have the perfect line up, but they consistently create good phones that will stir interest or outright love from consumers. The company sometime takes considerable (calculated) risks and it pays off. Good job HTC!

Dell’s XPS M1530 finally gets HD and LED backlit displays, just not at the same time

April 10th, 2008 accolades Posted in Laptops | No Comments » 398 views

Got a hundred bucks to burn? Lucky you, ’cause that Benjamin will now take the stock 15.4-inch 1,440 x 900 display of Dell’s XPS M1530 and squeeze in a full 1,920 x 1,200 pixel resolution. Toss in the optional $500 Blu-ray Disc drive and you’ve got yourself a sweet portable HD rig pumping Intel’s Penryn at the core. Another $50 and you’ve added a presumably brighter, LED backlit display but you’re now back to the original 1,440 x 900 resolution. Oh decisions, decision.
