April 16th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 282 views

Panny’s Lumix DMC-TZ50 isn’t brand new or anything — after all, we first caught wind of this WiFi-equipped point-and-shoot late last month in Japan. Nevertheless, Panasonic is now announcing that said camera will be heading Stateside with 802.11b/g capabilities, access to T-Mobile HotSpot service and the ability to upload photos directly to Google’s Picasa Web Albums — exactly like we saw at CES. Specs wise, you’ll find a 9.1-megapixel sensor, 10x optical zoom, 28mm wide-angle lens, 720p movie mode, SD expansion slot, video output, red-eye correction, optical image stabilization, the Venus Engine IV and a 3.0-inch LCD monitor to boot. Unfortunately, there’s still no word on when (or if) this technology will filter out to more Panasonic models, but folks interested in this here camera can pick one up next month for $449.95.

Orkut for Mobile and Low-Band Connections

April 16th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 266 views

Orkut has been around for nearly 3-4 years now (correct me if I am wrong?) and still Google is not ready to strip the Beta tag. It is a good social network with good and light social features for social networking users but fails to conquer services like MySpace and Facebook.

Recently Orkut launched a low-bandwidth version in hopes of gaining popularity among the dial-up masses of Pakistan, India and other such countries but I personally do not see any good use of it. However the users who can’t leave their beloved 28.8k modems (which I hardly think even exist anymore) can try the low-bandwidth Orkut version which strips off all images and makes browsing fast.

To use the low-band version change your profile settings:

Windows XP SP3 release just around the bend?

April 16th, 2008 accolades Posted in Microsoft | No Comments » 317 views

Though we originally expected (read: hoped) that Microsoft would dish out Service Pack 3 for Windows XP late last month, it seems the deed may actually get done before May dawns. According to an “internal schedule” fetched over at Neowin, OEMs, volume license, Connect, MSDN and TechNet subscribers will have access to the update on April 21st, while most average joes / janes won’t notice it until April 29th when it hits the Microsoft / Windows Update download center. For folks too busy carrying on to worry over which SP their XP is running, they could very well overlook the automatic update scheduled to land on June 10th. (Re)mark your calendars, won’t you?

24.4 megapixel Nikon D3X DSLR in the works?

April 16th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 320 views

Some entirely too ingenious hackers have found a reference to the rumored D3X deep within the bowels of Nikon’s D3 firmware. The reference includes a list of resolutions available to the upcoming shooter, and it’s apparently set to max out at a potentially Higgs Boson-inducing 24.4 megapixels. Word has it that this sensor is likely a variant of the megapixel monster behind Sony’s upcoming A900, but since this is all being extrapolated from a few numbers hidden in some firmware, we’re going to try not to get too ahead of ourselves at this point.

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT upgrade kit available for older Mac Pro desktops

April 16th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 519 views

Owners of first-generation Mac Pros, rejoice. Unless you already laid down the cash for one of those upgrade kits meant only for early 2008 machines, that is. For the rest of you, Apple has delivered a new NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT upgrade kit built specifically for your machine. As expected, the card itself looks the same — twin dual-link DVI ports, 512MB of dedicated GDDR3 RAM, etc. — but the Apple store now carries two distinct products to distinguish between the card compatible with early 2008 rigs and the Mac Pros before it. If you’ve managed to hold off buying a new machine this long, you can order yourself an all new graphics card right now for $279.

Alienware’s Aurora desktop storms back: AMD Phenom 9850 included

April 16th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 299 views

Check it: AMD’s potent Phenom 9850 processor, which had a fairly impressive showing during its recent benchmarking test, has teamed up with a pair of ATI’s Radeon HD 3870 X2s to bring the Aurora desktop back on the scene. Available now and starting at just $999, Alienware’s (potentially) “value-priced” gaming rig can be equipped with one of four AMD CPUs, a liquid-cooling system, twin 512MB 3870 X2 GPUs, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a few terabytes of HDD space, a Blu-ray reader (or burner if you’ve got the cash), an optional (but totally necessary) Killer K1 gaming NIC, Ageia PhysX processor and your choice of colored enclosures. Of course, speccing this beauty into a rig worth gloating over will easily set you back four large or so, but hey, you only live once, right?

Nokia’s 6212 with Bluetooth NFC: Let the pairing revolution begin!

April 15th, 2008 accolades Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments » 285 views

This is the day we’ve been waiting for. While the 3G Nokia 6212 classic doesn’t look like much, what it lacks in style is more than made up by the genius of Bluetooth-enabled Near Field Communication. If you remember the video we showed you way back in March of 2007, the combo makes device pairing and transferring content like photos, video, music, calendar data, contacts, etc. as easy a touching the phone to a NFC-enabled picture frame, cellphone, speaker, or headset like Nokia’s own NFC-variant of the BH-210. It will also work with NFC payment systems. According to Jeremy Belostock, the Head of Near Field Communications at Nokia, “NFC-capable handsets such as the Nokia 6212 classic are set to change the way mobile phone users interact with devices and services in their surroundings.” You said it Jeremy, you said it. Expected to start shipping in Europe and Asia in the Q3 for about €200.

O2 slashing £100 from 8GB iPhone in UK

April 15th, 2008 accolades Posted in IPod | No Comments » 535 views

The whispers are true, or so it seems. According to Stuff,  is getting set to one-up T-Mobile’s price cutting affair in Germany by hacking a full £100 from the 8GB iPhone in the UK (bringing it down to £169). Better still, the discount will apply regardless of which contract selection you make, whereas T-Mobile forced users to sign the dotted line on a pricey Complete XL plan. Unfortunately, the lower sticker only applies to the 8GB version — the 16GB model will remain £329 — but anyone who sprung for one of the former iterations within the last month will receive an “Ultimate Price Promise” £100 refund voucher. Before you dash out to cash in, it should be noted that the deal is set to expire come June — and we certainly don’t have to remind you what that could mean.

April 15th, 2008 accolades Posted in Laptops | No Comments » 425 views

Say it ain’t so! Just a week after HP’s totally adorable 2133 Mini-Note PC popped online for purchase, we’ve received word that pre-orderers aren’t going to be seeing their new machine quite as soon as originally expected. Reportedly, HP has sent out notifications to customers who pre-ordered to let them know that their lappies won’t be shipping today as promised, but there’s no word on how long the delay will last. Hang in there, subnote lovers — a tracking number is bound to come soon (er, we hope).
