While working as a web designer I have come to rely on a number of web applications that make my job easier, they are simple to use, need no software installed on my machine and provide value – here I cover some of the very best tools that you should know..

Campaignmonitor – Manage mailing lists and newsletters from an excellent online interface.

Campaignmonitor makes it very easy to collect subscriptions , providing you with the html to place a subscribe box and collect emails. You can then create a campaign with your own html email template and send it from their site.

The most usefull part for me is all the data you can view after a mailing – showing clickthrough rates, unopened email numbers etc. The interface is also brandable to allow your clients access to their reports.

Crazy Egg – Visual tracking of where visitors click on your websites

A very interesting product that I participated in beta testing of, simply install a piece of javascript on a website you’d like to track and crazyegg will provide statistics of which links were clicked. The app provides you with some nice charts and a heat map to help you optimise parts of your site you’d like to draw attention to.

Recently launched is an open source script called ClickHeat which appears to offer the same heatmap capabilities but I haven’t tried this out yet.

Dropsend – Allows you to send files of up to 1gb

This application allows you to send files to clients that you couldn’t email because of size restrictions, it also works as an online storage solution so you can have access to your files in the event of a hard drive failiure etc.

I haven’t personally tested this service as I operate my own server so can put client files on my own webspace but I can see how it is usefull for someone without this.

Blinksale – Online invoicing app

A app with a great interface that allows you to keep a record of your clients, send them invoices and manage recurring billing, send reminders etc.

Basecamp – Project management

A handy app from the 37 signals bunch allowing you to project manage online, features include to-do lists, milestones, chat and writeboards. Usefull if you’re working with contractors which may not be located at the same office as you or just if you need access to the project data while on the road or from home etc – highly recommended and as usual with 37 signals products includes a free version.

And there you have it, the top 5 web apps to make designers live easier!

For purposes of this blog post I am going to be calling this style of site “Wide Web 2.0″, I know web 2.0 isn’t a design style nor should it be but these style of sites starting appearing on web apps and web 2.0 sites. They basically consist of vertical areas which stretch 100% of the screen with a fixed width center that houses the content. Other characteristics are gradients, gloss effects and large footer areas containing more content. Lets take a look at some examples …

Hi all, I am really sorry for not posting anything the past week. I was really busy with watching anime and playing counter strike. I had been watching an anime series since the past two months and I was really close to the end so I was too hooked into watching that rather then posting here.

Anyways, today I will be sharing with you a couple of nice web 2.0 logo generators. So if you are looking for a new web 2.0 logo for your site then look no further. These tools will really save you a lot of time.

1.

LogoCreator probably has the most options to tweak and optimize your logo to your liking. It also has 5 pre-made templates that you can choose from to make your own web 2.0 logo. You can choose from a variety of different options to change the look of your logo such as font size, font face, mirror space and effect, transparency, and many more options. It probably is the most versatile logo generator out of the four. I highly recommend it.

2.

SimWebSol Logo Generator also offers a wide range of options for you to customize the look of your logo. A couple of nice tweaks include the reflection proximity and the “Add Symbol” option. Basically you can choose from a number of different symbols that include the beta text as well as many other little graphic symbols. I really liked this symbol feature and no other web 2.0 logo generator has this feature.

3.

Web 2.0 STYLr is a nice logo generator as well. It has a couple of nice tweaks as well to make an impressive web 2.0 logo generator. There is also a nice feature that lets you add an icon to the left of the text. So in the end you will have your icon to the left and your generated text to the right. You should try this feature out as well.

4.

Web2.0V2Logo Creatr is a nice little and probably the most easiest logo generator to use. You only need to type in your text and change a total of two options. Their is only one effect that you can do with this logo generator but its good so it is kinda useful. Your logo will look similar to the logo above.

This Photoshop tutorial will explain how to make a web 2.0 glossy logo or icon if you like. I tried to keep it as simple as possible. If you have any questions post them in the comments below.

I am starting with a 400×300 px white canvas. Draw your basic shape. I have started with a custom shape from Photoshop’s presets.

Step 1

Fill the shape with a nice orange color (I am using #ff6600)

Step 2

Apply Bevel and Emboss to the layer using the following values :

Structure

Style : Inner Bevel

Technique : Smooth

Depth : 100%

Direction : Up

Size : 200px

Soften : 0px

Shading

Angle : 120 (use global light checked)

Altitude : 30

Highlight mode : Screen, Opacity : 75%

Shadow mode : Multiply (color : #ff0000), opacity 75%.

Step 3

Stoke the layer with an orange color 3 pixels in size (I am using the same orange as the fill : #ff6600)

Step 4

Apply an inner glow, size 40px.

Step 5

Create a new top layer and using the Elliptical Marquee Tool create an oval over the top of the original shape layer. Fill this layer with gradient from white to transparent (white at the bottom, transparent at the top). Give this layer a 50% opacity. You may rotate this layer so it will look cooler.

Step 6

Make another top layer and using the Elliptical Marquee Tool create an oval over the bottom of the original shape layer. Fill this layer with gradient from black to transparent (black at the top, transparent at the bottom). Give this layer a 80% opacity and a soft light or a hard mix blend.

Step 7

Now to create a nice mirror effect we’ll move all the layers to the top of the canvas and duplicate the original shape layer. Flip Vertical the clone of the shape layer and align it so it touches the bottom of the original shape layer.

Step 8

Add a new layer and using the Rectangular marquee tool make a selection starting at the bottom of the original shape layer like in the image below. Apply to this layer a gradient from white at the bottom to transparent at the top.

Step 9

Add some nice text using a good typeface and you’re set.
