Apple evaluating “all you can eat” iTunes option?

March 19th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 290 views

The subscription-based iTunes rumor has been around for what feels like eons, and apparently, it’s rearing its always intriguing head once more. According to a report over at Financial Times, the suits in Cupertino are currently “in discussions” with major music outfits about a new model that could essentially “give customers free access to the entire iTunes music library in exchange for paying a premium for its iPod and iPhone devices.” Reportedly, a distribution model similar to Nokia’s “Comes with Music” could be used on both iPhones and iPods, while traditional subscriptions would be reserved for the iPhone — a device which has a monthly billing relationship already attached to it. As it stands, we’re hearing that the major holdup is Apple’s hesitation to pay big bucks in order to access the labels’ libraries, but here’s to hoping the iTunes buffet opens for business sooner rather than later. SanDisk launches Sansa Sessions — music distribution by microSD, what else

March 19th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 271 views

SanDisk just dipped its toe into the digital content distribution waters with the launch of Sansa Sessions. Of course, this isn’t an on-line storefront, it’s flash-based naturally in support of SanDisk’s core business. As such, the US-based program relies upon microSD cards to distribute DRM-free tracks of unspecified quality from more than 50 “emerging artists” on more than 30 labels. At the moment, the featured artists include All Time Low, Ladytron, Magnet, Nada Surf, Of Montreal and The Coup. SanDisk has tied a free, 55 track microSD “sampler” card (of el cheapo 512MB capacity, presumably) to the purchase of its 8GB Sansa Fuze MP3 player. While the $0 cost and DRM-free aspects of Sansa Sessions are certainly appealing to us, this seems best fitted as a record / artist promotional tool than it does a replacement for web-based or over-the-air music distribution.

Panasonic SV-SD870N D-snap DAP goes 100 hours strong

March 18th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 276 views

Nah, Panasonic’s SV-SD870N isn’t the longest lasting DAP we’ve ever laid eyes upon, but few would find the courage to kvetch over 100 hours on a full charge. The latest in Panasonic’s D-snap lineup, this unit promises to cut out “83-percent” of surrounding noise (and a good chunk of battery life) at the press of a button and supports SD / SDHC cards along with direct recording if plugged into a D-dock device. Furthermore, this one is set to arrive in red, black, silver, blue and white motifs, come stocked with a 2GB SD card, boast USB 2.0 connectivity and play nice with AAC, WMA and MP3 file formats. Quite frankly, we’re still a little turned off by that interface, but those unconcerned with such matters can slip one in their pocket next month.

Meizu M8 interface gets tweaked once again. A few pixels to the left, please?

March 16th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 306 views

While it appears that Meizu’s infringement shutdown at CeBIT was for unlicensed MP3 usage, and not at all to do with the eerie resemblance to a certain iPhone, the company still seems eager to prove to the world it is brewing something unique with the M8 mini One. CEO Jack Wong posted a bunch of new shots to the Meizu forums with small interface tweaks that inch the OS a bit away from its iPhone roots — but certainly not far.

Diamond-studded iPod shuffle to be auctioned in London

March 16th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 309 views

Yeah, there’s a lot of good, civically-minded things you could do with your cash… but wouldn’t it be more fun to blow it on a 1GB iPod? If you’re dying to prove how little £20,000 (or around $40,000) means to you, here’s your chance. A jeweler named Thomas Heyerdahl has created an 18 karat, diamond studded, white and pink gold iPod shuffle, meant to be auctioned at a charity in London. We’ve seen an almost identical version which appeared to be selling just for the heck of it — at least this one seems to be going to good cause.

Creative set to release X-Fi-equipped X30 iPod dock

March 15th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 325 views

It’s been a little while since we’ve seen a new X-Fi device from Creative, but it looks like the company’s now set to expand it’s audio-enhancing empire a bit further, with its new X30 iPod dock apparently nearly ready for a release. While there’s unfortunately no wireless streaming going on here, the dock will at least let you hook your iPod up to a stereo or pair of speakers, as well as a TV thanks to the dock’s s-video port, with that much-hyped X-Fi technology promising to make everything sound better than ever. Look for this one to set you back just under €80 (or about $125) when it hits Europe next month — no word on a release ’round these parts just yet.

SanDisk’s Sansa Fuze reviewed

March 14th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 305 views

from SanDisk might just fit the bill. PC Magazine and CNET put the player through its paces and came out with a few nice things to say about it. Starting at $80 for 2GB and ramping up to $130 for 8GB, the player is certainly a good deal, and its diminutive form factor — a compromise between the Those of you hoping to have your mind blown can go ahead and leave quietly out the back, but for anyone else hoping for a dirt-cheap and fairly lovable DAP, the Sansa FuzeClip and the View — measures a mere 0.3-inches thick, while still managing a quality feel and a microSD slot. Unfortunately, the size only leaves room for a 1.9-inch screen, which CNET calls “dingy,” and SanDisk’s proprietary syncing port on the player isn’t winning it any fans. Audio quality doesn’t quite match the Sony A810 or Samsung P2, and the codec support is fairly limited, but obviously Rhapsody integration is the real draw here. These days 24 hours of audio playback isn’t earth shattering either, but it’s certainly commendable, and while it doesn’t appear SanDisk is going to change to face of the DAP market with this unit, we’re sure they’ve hit the sweet spot for some.

Boston Acoustics takes a shot with Duo-i iPod boombox

March 12th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 272 views

Believe it or not, the deluge of iPod sound systems has died down in the past couple of months, but that’s not to say newcomers won’t join the absolutely oversaturated market. Case in point: Boston Acoustics is offering up an AM / FM Stereo Radio with iPod dock, which packs a pair of 3.5-inch full-range drivers, BassTrac low-frequency processing, twin auxiliary ports for connecting other DAPs / PMPs, line and stereo headphone outputs and a fancy display that automatically adjusts to ambient light. Furthermore, you’ll find dual independent alarm clocks, a “touch” (slam?) sensitive snooze bar and a wireless remote to keep your derriere planted. As for pricing, this one’s pretty much par for the course at $199.99.

The first MP3 player celebrates its 10th birthday

March 11th, 2008 Adomboppy Posted in IPod No Comments » 279 views

Odds are, you take your iPod or Zune for granted. You probably don’t think about the crazy technological advancements we’ve made, but take a ten-year look back at the world’s first MP3 player — the MPMan F10 — and you’ll get a sense of just how far we’ve come. Manufactured by Korea’s Saehan Information Systems, the device was launched in March of 1998 at CeBIT, and went on sale in the Summer through Eiger Labs for $250. The player featured 32MB of flash memory (which could be upgraded to 64MB via mail-in scheme), connected to PCs via parallel port, and had a miniscule LCD for playback info — but it laid the groundwork for the tech we have today. Following the MPMan’s release, Rio unleashed its PMP300, which received a warmer reception and all-but eclipsed the F10′s status as “first” amongst players, likely due to the company’s well-known (and groundbreaking) legal battle against the RIAA. Still, first is first, so help keep the MPMan’s rich history alive, and celebrate its ten-year anniversary this month with campfire songs and story-telling. Check out the archived read link of the original Eiger Labs site for a wild and wacky trip through time.
