April 16th, 2008 accolades Posted in Firefox No Comments » 338 views

Its definitely hard to remember the usernames and passwords for all the websites that we visit daily. The benefit of using a smart browser like Firefox is that it saves the login credentials within the Firefox password manager and retrieves them automatically when you visit a particular website thus allowing you to access it.

But what if you want to print out that login credentials list for future reference or want to save it as a document list somewhere within your operating system. Password Export, a Firefox addon, is there to help you in this regard.

IE Tab: Firefox extension for web developer

January 30th, 2008 admin Posted in Firefox No Comments » 320 views

ie7 tab: firefox extension
I just installed IE tab and I found it comes handy to me especially when I do some tinkerings on my blog and I want to see how my blog changes to the modifications. The Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox will sometimes display different things for the same, say HTML code.

Running 2 browsers simultaneously might be a good idea, but this practice consumes more memory and since I always run few more programs like Adobe Photoshop and MATLAB, it usually took my computer to its knees. For web developers this firefox extension will be helpful as you can see how your webpage displayed in IE with just one click and then switch back to Firefox.

Me: I hope they will develop plugin that will integrate Opera and other major browsers under one roof; Firefox!

Open PDF files outside your browsers

January 30th, 2008 admin Posted in Firefox No Comments » 385 views

Sometimes it’s annoying to find that a link we are opening are PDF files and they freeze our browsers as they try to open the adobe acrobat reader. Surely this is not the case for computer equipped with latest processor, massive RAM etc but as far as my computer is concerned, it’s really a big deal. You might want to consider the following tips if this is a case too for you. I will go with Firefox first as this is my primary browser.

1. Firefox

There are two ways of dealing with PDF files in Firefox.

a) Link Alert – Once this plugin is installed to Firefox, the cursor will change its icon to the files associated with the links you are hovering on. There is further details about this plugin at my previous post (Firefox plugin: link alert).

b) PDF download – This plugin gives you the option on whether to open the PDF files on your browser or to save directly into your hard disk.

2. Internet Explorer

Firefox password security hole

January 30th, 2008 admin Posted in Firefox No Comments » 371 views

Firefox loopholeIf you were a person who lets Firefox saves your passwords, you might want to consider the downside of doing this routine. New exploit known as Reverse Cross-Site Request (RCSR), can expose passwords saved at a website (weblog or forum) that allows user-contributed-HTML codes to be added.

This security hole exposes Firefox users to greater vulnerability as compared to Internet Explorer 7, eventhough RCSR attacks are highly targeting the Internet Explorer 7.

A recent large-scale attack using RCSR targeted MySpace.com users and was first reported by Netcraft 10/27/2006. That incident involved fake login forms on the MySpace website inviting users to type in their username and password.Chapin says worsening the problem is the fact forms can be completely hidden from view. After saving a website password in Firefox, it’s possible for that password to be transmitted to another website by unwittingly clicking on an invisible image link

You can see yourself how this exploit works by visiting this link. Enter any username or password (random alphabets and numbers will do) and you will be brought to a new site with youtube video embedded in that new page. Take a closer look and you will notice that if you click on the video you will be brought to, fortunately, google search page (phisher can redirect your password to their website).

Yeah, it’s scary indeed. Even you are well aware of this issue, the chance is still there for you to fall into this trap, as these login forms are having professional look and appear to be “official” and “original”.

SEO plugin: SEO Quake

January 30th, 2008 admin Posted in Firefox 1 Comment » 3,237 views

It’s really time consuming if you are browsing through a website and really keen to learn about its pagerank, alexa ranking, number of backlinks it has and all SEO data associated to it especially when it involves many sites. SEO Quake simplify your chores by automatically displaying all SEO data at the top of websites you drop by and is currently available to the Internet Explorer and Firefox users. Basically, this plugin consists of two functional parts that are Seo Bar and Inclusion of Parameters in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs)

SeoBar
SeoBar can be described as an additional toolbar, which shows the values of selected parameters for the page currently opened in the browser window. Set of parameters shown by SeoBar is fully customizable by user.

Inclusion of parameters in SERPs
After submission of the query into the search engine user is presented with SERP with search results. SeoQuake shows values of the parameters for search results under each search result shown on SERP. Set of parameters shown is fully customizable by user. Loading of parameters can be handled in two different ways – simultaneously with the loading of the SERP or after SERP loading, by user demand.

Parameters
While having a wide range of default parameters, SeoQuake also gives users the opportunity to create their own parameters and also group them into presets and switch between these presets on the fly, during the work. Ok, now it’s time to take a peek at SEO Quake for more details.
